Small businesses assume they're too small to be worth a hacker's time, and that assumption is what makes them targets. Phishing runs on volume, so being small is no protection. VikingCloud research found that 40% of small and medium-sized businesses say a cyberattack costing $100,000 or less could put them out of business, a threshold low enough that one fraudulent invoice or one shared authorization code can close the doors for good. At a Lima/Allen County Chamber of Commerce panel, a credit union fraud investigator, a Lima police detective, and a local IT company president laid out the defenses owners can put in place now, from dual controls on payments to ongoing staff training.
