Global Security Architect | Real-World Risk Reducer | Strategic Advisor
With 27+ years in cybersecurity leadership, architecture, and operations, Fayyaz Makhani has seen just about every version of “secure enough.”
As Global Security Architect at VikingCloud, Fayyaz helps organizations build security programs that actually reduce risk, not just generate reports. He blends deep technical expertise with sharp business judgment, stepping in when the stakes are high and clarity is low.
He’s also at the forefront of integrating AI into practical, real-world security strategy, always pushing teams to ask better questions and focus on what truly moves the needle.
Turning Complexity into Clarity
Fayyaz’s career has a consistent theme: cut through the noise. From advising boards during major incidents to guiding engineering teams through architectural transformation, he focuses on the few decisions that meaningfully change risk posture.
He’s known for asking tough questions early:
- Where are your true trust boundaries?
- Who actually owns risk?
- Are you solving the right problem?
Because when those questions go unanswered, bigger challenges follow.
Whether aligning practices with business objectives or designing scalable security programs, Fayyaz is relentless about one thing: energy should be spent reducing risk, not checking boxes.
Industry Expertise and Thought Leadership
Fayyaz is a frequent speaker at cybersecurity and AI conferences and will soon be presenting on Quantum Computing in the Payment Ecosystem.
His credentials include AAIA, CISSP, CISA, CISM, and ISO 27001 Lead Auditor, backed by hands-on leadership roles ranging from Managing Consultant to Senior Director.
Q&A with Fayyaz Makhani
Q: What excites you most about your job right now?
"I’m energized when teams are overwhelmed by tools and frameworks and need clarity on what to fix first. Recently, I worked with an organization planning major investments in new security tooling while still having fundamental architectural gaps. We reset priorities around identity, access, and trust boundaries instead of adding more technology. That shift immediately reduced risk."
Q: What’s the biggest challenge organizations face?
"I see many organizations that mistake activity for progress. They invest in tools, frameworks, and reports but avoid making the hard architectural and risk decisions. Without clear accountability for reducing real risk, security becomes reactive and fragmented."
Q: What’s your top advice for organizations?
"Organizations should focus on the decisions that actually reduce risk, not on checking boxes or buying more tools. For example, I worked with a company that spent heavily on monitoring and alerting, but their identity and access controls were immature. By addressing those first, they immediately cut their exposure and made all other tools more effective."
