Q&A with Howell King

What gets you most excited/passionate about your job right now? Any examples?

I’m most excited by the chance to approach problems like a hacker, discovering real-world security vulnerabilities before they can be exploited. I enjoy applying creative problem-solving and technical skills to identify weaknesses and offer recommendations to help organizations strengthen their security.

Finding rare yet critical issues, such as account takeovers or privilege escalation, is deeply satisfying. While these vectors are well-known, the actual execution of a full compromise remains a complex and rewarding challenge. I also take pride in helping organizations by finding and reporting vulnerabilities of any size, knowing that every finding, big or small, helps make their security stronger.

What is the biggest challenge organizations are experiencing when you speak to them?

The biggest challenge I see is that organizations often fail to take every vulnerability seriously, regardless of how minor it may seem. Even small issues can be exploited in unexpected ways, and with AI-assisted attacks, vulnerabilities are being discovered and used against companies faster than ever before. It’s essential for organizations to treat all vulnerabilities as significant and address them proactively before attackers do.

What’s your top piece of advice for organizations? Include an example.

Organizations should make regular vulnerability assessments and penetration tests standard practice, not just an occasional task. It’s also crucial to invest adequately in security and provide frequent security awareness training, since not all attacks come from external sources. Insider threats, misconfigurations, and human error can be just as damaging as outside attacks.

Why Howell Matters

Howell combines technical excellence with empathy, adaptability, and real-world insight. His dedication to precision, integrity, and continuous growth makes him an invaluable part of VikingCloud’s offensive security practice.
